STORY
舞台は気高き北の大地・北海道、時代は、激動の明治末期―。
日露戦争においてもっとも過酷な戦場となった二〇三高地をはじめ、その鬼神のごとき戦いぶりに「不死身の杉元」と異名を付けられた元軍人・杉元佐一は、ある目的のために大金を手に入れるべく、北海道で砂金採りに明け暮れていた。 そこで杉元は、アイヌ民族から強奪された莫大な金塊の存在を知る。金塊を奪った男「のっぺら坊」は、捕まる直前に金塊をとある場所に隠し、そのありかを記した刺青を24人の囚人の身体に彫り、彼らを脱獄させた。
囚人の刺青は全員で一つの暗号になるという。
そんな折、野生のヒグマの襲撃を受けた杉元を、ひとりのアイヌの少女が救う。「アシㇼパ」という名の少女は、金塊を奪った男に父親を殺されていた。金塊を追う杉元と、父の仇を討ちたいアシㇼパは、行動を共にすることに。
同じく金塊を狙うのは、大日本帝国陸軍「第七師団」の鶴見篤四郎中尉。日露戦争で命を懸けて戦いながらも報われなかった師団員のため、北海道征服を目論んでおり、金塊をその軍資金代わりに必要としていた。
そして、もう一人、戊辰戦争で戦死したとされていた新撰組の「鬼の副長」こと土方歳三が脱獄囚の中におり、かつての盟友・永倉新八と合流し、自らの野望実現のため、金塊を追い求めていた。

The setting of this story is in Hokkaido, the solemn land in the north.
The era is a turbulent time, the end of the Meiji Era...
Saichi Sugimoto, the former soldier, is spending all his time searching for the gold dust in Hokkaido for some reason. He is known as “Immortal Sugimoto,” because he fought like he was possessed by the devil, such as on a 203 meter hill, which was the harsh battlefield during the Russo-Japanese War. While looking for the gold, he heard the existence of an enormous amount of gold. A group of Ainu was secretly gathering the gold, but it was stolen by one man called “Noppera-bou”. He hid it somewhere in Hokkaido before he got caught. After being caught in prison, he drew tattoos showing the place of gold on prisoners’ bodies and let them escape from there.
And it’s said that... all tattoos make one big code.
In that situation, Sugimoto was attacked by a brown bar and rescued by an Ainu girl, “Asirpa”. She has a past that her father was killed by “Noppera-bou”. They started to act together; One is for chasing the gold and the other is for revenge.
At the same time, Tokushirou Tsurumi, who is the First Lieutenant of the 7th Division in the Imperial Japanese Army, was also searching for the gold. He is aiming to conquer Hokkaido for soldiers who fought at the risk of their lives but were unrewarded in the Russo-Japanese War, so that he needs the gold as war funds.
There is one more person who needs the gold. The person is Toshizou Hijikata called “Merciless Vice-Commander,” who is said to have died in the Boshin War. He gets together with Shinpachi Nagakura, who is his sworn friend, and is searching for the gold to realize his ambition.
